This week's feature blogger is JACK DAVIS! Jack decided to write a blog about his two favorite things, Disney and Apple, thus the blog Disney Apple was born! I am impressed with Jack's blog because he actually coded his layout himself instead of using a premade template, and his blog has OVER A THOUSAND page views. Check out the logo that he designed himself:

Learning skills

This has been a busy week for the students with their first small 'project' due, a second one in progress and three assessments. In skills class, we spent time reviewing for each assessment by going over the study guides that the students completed and  providing them with additional practice as needed.  All students are eligible for additional time to complete the assessments and that time was given to them during skills class.  I also stressed to the students how important it is to budget their time and I reviewed with them examples of schedules so that they do not get behind.  As they begin their new units in all classes, I will preview the topics on Monday.

I continue to be available for after school help on Mondays and Wednesdays.  Students can make plans to stay after on a regular basis or 'drop in' at any time if they are having difficulty with a specific topic.

ELA and Math Project Update

10/20/2016

Dear 8 Blue Families,
We are writing to let you know about an exciting new project happening on team in ELA and math.
One of the district goals in Shrewsbury is for all teachers to incorporate Project Based Learning elements into their instruction by the end of the 2016-2017 school year. You can find links to the district goals and more information about Project Based Learning at the bottom of this email. You may have to copy and paste the links into your browser. We have designed a cross-curricular project between ELA and math that focuses on the driving question “what skills and personal qualities are necessary for success in today’s world?”
During this unit, students will be working in groups to create a business and write a business plan. In addition, in ELA, students will be reading biographies and focusing on the traits that made that individual successful, as well selections from The Outliers, The World is Flat, and Mindset: The New Psychology of Success during class.
The skills this unit focuses on are:
  • Writing for different audiences and purposes
  • Analyzing the elements of literature
  • Problem solving in context
  • Communicating mathematical thinking clearly and concisely
During this unit, we are regrouping classes based on the type of business the students are interested in starting. For students currently in honors and advanced math, relevant extensions will be provided. In addition, Ms. Sharon Freedman, the advanced math coach, will be coming into the classroom to work on advanced concepts with students. Upon completion of the unit in four weeks, students will return to their original class groupings.
We will be asking for parent volunteers to come give their business plans a “seal of approval” and a “seal of improvement.” Please keep your eyes out for more information soon!
We are excited for the students to experience the curriculum by applying it to real world situations. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you for your support,

Ms. Jill Carlin            Ms. Kate Lewis

Social Studies Update

Our first Social Studies test is Tuesday, October 25.  This test will be on the Rise of Rome, and includes Rome's origins, location, the early Republic, Julius Caesar, and the achievements of the Roman Empire.  Students received their study guide yesterday (10/17) and are required to complete and submit it by next Monday, October 24.  Each day this week, we will be doing some review.

Today, students are making their own trivia & test questions using the notes from the beginning of the unit - the photo below is E block as they get started on their trivia questions.  Ask your son or daughter what they thought was the most interesting thing they learned about in Rome - sometimes their answers even surprise me  :)

This week's blogger spotlight is on REBECCA GAUVIN! Rebecca's blog, Music in Simple Notes, talks about music theory, music history, notable composers, and more! Her posts are informative and comprehensive. I especially like how Rebecca made diagrams to help people understand some of the more complicated musical concepts.
