We are finishing up our Newton's Laws of Motion unit

We are building seats to protect an egg during a car crash into a wall. Ask your student how their seat will protect the egg and how Newton's Laws were used in designing the egg. (Hopefully they will talk about inertia, equal & opposite forces, and acceleration). We are testing on Monday and writing a conclusion on Tuesday.

Social Studies Update

11/1/2019

In Social Studies, we are focusing on the two ancient governments that have impacted the development of the US Government.  First, the students studied Greek city-states and focused on Athens & Sparta.  We talked about democracy and how the culture of Athens drove their participation in government.  In class, we used real-life situations that the Athenian ecclesia debated and voted on to get a feel for exactly how a direct democracy worked.  I was very impressed with students' ability to form their own conclusions quickly based on the roles in society they were assigned.  The attached photos are from this activity :)

This week, we started looking at Ancient Rome & are currently focusing on location & overall values.  Soon we will be looking specifically at the Roman Republic's representative democracy and comparing it to our government.

A MESSAGE FROM THE COMMUNITY SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP CLUB:

The Community Service and Leadership Club is sponsoring its annual Food Drive to support our Food for Families Food pantry from October 7- October 10, 2019.

Each set of color teams has been assigned specific food items that are needed for our families, however, any and all donations are welcome.  Assigning the foods ensures that we have a well-stocked pantry for the school year.  8 Blue's list of assigned foods is:

Single-serve applesauce
Tuna (cans or pouches)

Cream soups (
Mushroom, Chicken)
Cooking oil

Nutri Grain bars

Jelly (plastic bottle)

Tomato sauce (cans or plastic jars)

Shelf-stable milk

Students can bring in donations each day to their homeroom or donations can be dropped off in a box outside of the main office.  Last year Oak families donated over 1,000 pounds of food which supported several families along with stocking our share basket in the cafeteria when needed.
We thank you in advance for your support of this important program. Food insecurity is a national concern; everyone deserves a healthy meal.

ELA September Update #2

9/11/2019

This has been an exciting week in ELA on 8 Blue! Students worked on defining their interests and passions and they created their own personal blogs! Here is why students are blogging this year:
Picture
Students are blogging about things they are interested in. Some of the topics are dance,  book reviews, music, sports analysis, and more. I believe that teaching students to write for different purposes and audiences is an important skill. This unit also is teaching students about creating a positive digital footprint and gives them practice writing in the "real world."

The students are so enthusiastic about this assignment! I am so excited to see these amazing blogs as the year goes on. Ask your son or daughter to see their blogs! They should have the basic template set up, and the first post should be in progress. Their first two posts are due on Friday, so they should have a decent start!

You can see the blogs by going to the ELA course materials page in Schoology. There is a link to the blogs at the bottom of that page. Happy reading!
